Background of the Study

Hypertension is a major public health concern worldwide, and it is one of the leading risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and kidney failure. In Nigeria, including Kaduna State, the prevalence of hypertension is increasing, with lifestyle factors such as high salt intake contributing to the rising burden. The consumption of excessive amounts of salt has been linked to an increase in blood pressure, making it a key modifiable risk factor for hypertension. Dietary habits, particularly salt consumption, are influenced by cultural practices, food availability, and urbanization, which can vary significantly across different regions.

In Kaduna State, there is a growing concern about the health effects of high salt intake, particularly among urban populations. This study aims to investigate the relationship between high salt intake and the prevalence of hypertension in the state, assessing dietary habits, lifestyle factors, and healthcare access. By understanding the impact of salt intake on hypertension prevalence, the study will inform public health strategies aimed at reducing salt consumption and improving hypertension management.

Statement of the Problem

Excessive salt consumption has been identified as a major contributor to hypertension, yet the prevalence of high salt intake and its effect on hypertension remains underexplored in Kaduna State. With increasing urbanization and changing dietary patterns, it is essential to assess how salt consumption contributes to hypertension in the state. Without targeted interventions to reduce salt intake, hypertension rates are likely to continue rising, placing further strain on the healthcare system.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the relationship between high salt intake and hypertension prevalence in Kaduna State.

2. To evaluate the dietary habits related to salt consumption among residents of Kaduna State.

3. To recommend strategies for reducing high salt intake and preventing hypertension in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

1. What is the relationship between high salt intake and hypertension prevalence in Kaduna State?

2. What are the dietary habits related to salt consumption in Kaduna State?

3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce salt intake and prevent hypertension in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

1. High salt intake is positively correlated with the prevalence of hypertension in Kaduna State.

2. Dietary habits and lifestyle factors significantly contribute to high salt consumption in Kaduna State.

3. Public health interventions aimed at reducing salt intake can significantly reduce the prevalence of hypertension in Kaduna State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the relationship between salt intake and hypertension prevalence in Kaduna State. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported dietary habits and difficulties in obtaining accurate data on salt consumption across diverse populations.

Definition of Terms
